Eir gestured vaguely as she finished her mouthful, she wasn't about to spill her guts to a total stranger, "this whole trials business has me well out of my comfort zone." Anyway, if you could meet your progenitor on a semi-random planet, then just about anything could happen.

Kerren shrugged. "Being out of your comfort zone in such safe surroundings is a boon you should not take for granted. Being uncomfortable about some things is better than watching your back for those who want to bring you down because you're better."

“Does that happen a lot, in the Empire?” Tall poppy syndrome, it was sometimes called, when someone stood above the rest and it was just an invitation to lop their head off.

"It is the natural order of things. You remove the competition, and be wary of them trying to remove you," he looked away for a moment. It seemed he was glancing in the direction of the Sith pyramid. "Dog-eat-dog world I've heard some call it. It is meant to weed out the weak and unworthy."

Eir shook her head, “I wouldn’t call it natural. Asharl panthers might drive rivals off their territory, but they don’t outright kill each other while there’s enough resources to survive.” She finished her nutrient bar and tucked the wrapper away for later disposal, “and a society is only as strong as its weakest members, if you go around killing off all the competition, whose left to protect the ones who can’t fight?” or do you just kill them too, until there’s no one left?

He looked at her with some confusion. "Protect the ones who can't fight?" Kerren snorted once a brief chuckle. "It is a poor Sith who can't fight somehow. And the military would be doing a piss-poor job if it didn't train people to fight. That leaves only slaves - they can't fight, but they really don't matter in the eyes of the nobles or the Sith."

“Right, but society is more than just the Sith. I mean, there’s children to replenish your ranks, and your food and clothing and stuff, that all comes from somewhere, yeah?” The pureblood has come to the Jedi for their protection, so surely he didn’t believe in all this ‘kill the strong’ stuff.

"Well... children are the exception, I guess. Most protect their progeny and keep them away from dangers..." to a certain degree, he thought grimly. "As for food and clothing... uhm, slaves? At least as far as I know."

“So whose lightsaber has your name on it?” she was guessing, but a Sith refugee talking about watching for vibroknives in their back, it seemed like a safe guess.

"Right now? Only a few I'd guess, like Drascovina, or Destrus, for sure... once the news get back to Imperial space... I figure I'll have clan Sek and clan Rath considering me to be kill on sight. I have betrayed the Sith and defected after all," Kerren said with a surprisingly somber tone.

“What did you do?” Destrus could take a long walk off a short Dewbright pier for all the half-arkanian cared, and the blonde girl whose archaic name was too long to fully pronounce, even mentally, seemed like the fickle sort.

"I defected. That in itself is enough to be wanted dead. The Sith, for all the betrayal they do, do not like to make a habit of letting such things go by without reprecussions." Kerren's mouth pressed into a thin line.
"... The Force gave me a vision that it would be my death to stay. A death that I had no intention of being part of. But I was also shown a future as a Jedi." He sighed. "Maybe this was some test I failed."

Mustering all the maturity of her fourteen years, she looked at Kerren solemnly, “do you feel like you failed? behind the doubt, behind the repercussions, do you feel wrong?” The girl’s expression was earnest, perhaps even concerned, as she put Chriala’s counsel to the pureblood.
