Lost and found [D1, MA]

Zizzy walked down the hallways toward the teachers' rooms. She knew that Masters Mira and Chriala had offices fairly close to each other and hoped one of them would be in. The horticulture class had been a much needed distraction from the events of the market and she was hopeful that the mysterious device could be identified. Pulling out her comments she called the other three trainees who had been there when they found it, leaving messages to say where she was going. With a spring in her step she knocked on the door.

Byron arrived some time later having grabbed a sandwich, which he ate as he walked the hall. He really had not had a chance to really look the object over and figured now would be a good chance to get some answers.

Plus he was curious just why the Black Sun wanted it.

"Come in, child." Master Chriala's voice could be heard from beyond the door.

[Zanja]

Zanja flattened a wayward strand of hair down around one horn and then slipped in with the others. With her conversation with Master Oblero still on her mind, she was thinking about carrying herself like an adult with a Jedi responsibility to discharge... whatever that looked like.

With a nod to her intrepid companions Zizzy pushed the door open. Her tendrils seemed to be behaving themselves for the moment.

"Good afternoon Master Chriala." She took the wrapped item out of her robes and made to hand it over. "There was an incident at the market this morning, and we ended up with this device. I don't recognise the markings, but it seems to be powered by the force. We thought it would be best to bring it to you."

Master Chriala's particular corner of the offices was a tad unusual, matching her. They were almost entirely bare of ornament, except for her massive wooden desk, and a painting on the wall. The painting was made with broad strokes and bold colors, form hinted at but never quite coalescing. It was... interesting.

Sitting behind her desk, Chriala smiled to each student. Or... near each student anyway. "How interesting." She kept her hands flat on the desk, not yet accepting the item. "And what do you think it is? Share your thoughts with me."

Zizzy looked from one companion to the other, then presssed ahead. "I thought it might be some sort of datapad or recording device. It was being stolen by a Black Sun thug until Byron stopped him. So maybe it has some information they wanted? We decided not to try to power it up until we spoke to a Master."

She looked to see if the others wanted to add anything.

"Hmmmm..." Reaching out, Chriala gently took the device. Her head tilted to the side as she carefully ran both hands over it.

Turning slightly, she tilted her head at Zizzy, now. "You are close, child. One might call it a datapad, but one with a very particular purpose. What do you know of the Gree?"

[Zizzy Roosh]

As it turned out, Zizzy had recently read a book about the Gree!

"Oh, the Gree? Well Master Chriala, I do know that they are six limbed cephalopods with big brains and adapted to a Type II atmosphere. Each pair of tentacles has a specific and different function. They are an ancient species, like really really old, known to produce sophisticated and almost miraculous technology, but are considered quite mysterious." She paused to tap her chin. "It's rare to see them, and they are a highly advanced species. I thought I read something about them living in seclusion now."

She looked at the Master to see if she had got her Gree facts correct.

Chriala's eyebrows went up. Probably; it was a little hard to tell behind the eyecloth. "My goodness, child. That is rather more than I expected." She gave Zizzy a nod and a smile. "If you know that much, then you know that their technology is both esoteric and advanced."

She turned the device over, revealing a series of markings on the back. "These are meant to guide you. It will make the process easier. And then if you concentrate, and be patient..."

A frown of concentration crossed her features as she flipped the device back over. After a few moments, an image appeared. It seemed to be a series of twisting translucent lines, some thicker, some narrower, crossing and overlapping. They generally went at right angles, although there were some curves. One in particular seemed to be highlighted.

Byron said, "I think I recognize it."

OOC: He knew about the object but Threat used to have him be unsure of answering, and he knows the latter thing on the Knowledge Core Worlds question, but with Threat... probably wrapped some common falsehoods.

"Oh, wow. That's neat!" She gave it a long look but it didn't click with her.

Zizzy looked at Byron and gave him an encouraging smile. She didn't recognise this one, her knowledge of the core worlds being very general.

Byron can recognize the device as a map, and the twisty lines bring The Works to mind. But even though there's an entrance marked, he can't at a glance tell where this is (threat).

"It looks like a map... maybe the Works but I don't recognize some of the landmarks," he offered.

[Zanja]

“Yeah, I think you’re right,” Zanja agreed. “It’s the right kind of layout for down there. But what would those Gree have been doing making a map down there? Or what would they be doing that Black Sun would also care about. I bet you that’s a shorter list.”

She gave Zanja a smile for her contribution. It made her feel they were all really working like a team now. "Huh. A map of The Works? On a Gree device?" She tapped her lower lip. "Well they were around a long time, but that means they must have been here. So do Black Sun want this because it's a map, or because it's a map that points to Gree devices?"

[Chriala Hulis]

"A good question." Master Chriala said. "How do you propose finding the answer?"

[Zizzy Roosh]

She tapped her chin. "Well, I'd rather not have to talk to any criminals. Oh, we could compare this map to the one I'm sure must exist in the archives. Then we can find out what area it's leading to and investgate."

Her face brightened again. "We could have a field trip Master! I mean, I'm sure you don't want us running around in the Works by ourselves?"

[Zanja]

"Could the Gree have any left stuff down there that would be valuable now? Art things, or rare materials?" Zanja asked, still worrying at the problem from the other end. "The kind of things the Suns could try to sell. Or weapons." She played with the end of a strand of straight black hair, wearing a contemplative scowl. "Otherwise, they might be using this part of the Works as a bolthole or a cache or something, but then why would they need a map?"
