Prep Kids [Day 3 LA]

[Zanja]

Zanja stuffed her hands in her pockets and glanced over at Taime. "Can't remember the last time I spent this much money at once," she admitted a bit gruffly, quiet against the street noise. It was a slightly weird feeling; usually she came to the market with a few creds up her sleeve and bought one Klatooinian ice or something. Now they were supposed to equip an expedition, or at least some of the others were treating it that way.

No, wait, maybe she could remember spending that much money, once. Back on Zionolis... on sweets. That had to have been at least a couple hundred credits; even shared among a dozen street kids, it had made them all sick for a couple of days. Truly a wildly ill-advised use of a big score, in retrospect. Zanja decided not to mention it.

[Taime Jorel]

He nods, uneasy to the max about having this much to work with. "I know. I doubt I've seen this much before in my life. But I guess that means they trust us?"

[Zanja]

"Sure. Or they're giving us enough rope," Zanja said with a gravelly chuckle. "So what're you picking up? I figure I need a knapsack to carry stuff in, at least. Maybe something to eat, that never hurts."

[Taime Jorel]

He nods along. "Backpack, some field rations, and some kind of way to stay warm beyond my thermal cloak." He picked at it, still touched Eir had gotten it for him.

"I figure staying warm and dry will be the toughest part."

[Zanja]

"Maybe?" Zanja frowned thoughtfully. "I figure doing whatever tasks they want us to do is supposed to be the hard part."

[Taime Jorel]

He shrugs. "The tasks will always be there. But if we don't sleep and eat well, we won't be able to do much. At least, I know I can't think if I haven't slept." He wandered the stalls as he spoke, picking up a bit of firepaste as he did. "A little fire can be good for morale. Hopefully we won't need much."

[Zanja]

"Burning stuff is fun," Zanja had to agree. She picked up a large, sturdy-looking survival knife from one of the shelves, testing its balance in her right and left hands. Sensing a skeptical look from the shop clerk, she shot them an eloquent I'm-not-gonna-shoplift-I'm-a-kriffing-Jedi glare, then returned her attention to the knife, which turned out to have an array of small, basic survival supplies tucked into a compartment in the handle.

"I'd feel stupid hauling a camping store worth of crap around and never using half of it, though," she added after a bit more thought.

He nods along. "Less stupid than you might feel of not grabbing something though and wishing you had it later."

[Zanja]

"I guess." Zanja shrugged, but didn't put the knife back on the shelf. It was a pretty cool toy. "I'm good at making do with not much."

[Taime Jorel]

He nods. "Its a good skill to have. But I don't know much of what Ilum is like. I figure shelter, food and water are the most important things. Everything else is a little more optional."

[Zanja]

"It's really cold, right? Ice world cold." Zanja frowned around at the shelves and selected a pair of scanner goggles to try out, holding them up to her face. These ones were obviously too big, bumping up awkwardly against her frontmost horns. "You got cold weather clothing yet?"

[Taime Jorel]

He nodded. "Eir was nice and got me a thermal cloak. Even tailored it to my size. So I should be good on that front. Though maybe I should get some boots?" He looked around but the boots looked a little pricey.

[Zanja]

"Just take some big socks," Zanja suggested with a shrug, still trying various pairs of goggles. Too small, too big, too heavy... "That's what I'm gonna do. Buying new boots is a pain. I did get a thermal cloak, though."

[Taime Jorel]

He nods. "That sounds like a better plan. Cheaper too." Off in the distance, he spots an odd sort of shop with tents and odds and ends. "Wanna look over there?"

[Zanja]

"Sure. Just lemme pay for these." Zanja held up a pair of goggles, dangling them by their strap; apparently she'd found some that suited her.

She made short work of paying for the goggles and knife (glowering at the clerk as if to dare him to ask what a teenager on Coruscant wanted with a wilderness survival knife), then followed Taime over to the... camping store? "Some of this stuff looks pretty heavy," she said, a little doubtfully.

He nods, but keeps digging through stuff." Yeah, but with the cold on Ilum, we might need something a little more heavy duty." As he digs, he finds a portable survival shelter. "This sort of thing...that's what I'm getting."

[Zanja]

"You think they're gonna dump us on a glacier without shelter?" Zanja asked with a worried frown. "That's pretty harsh."

[Taime Jorel]

He shrugs. "Corvin said to be prepared for anything. And they would probably come get us if we were at risk of getting really hurt. But this training is supposed to be pretty hard, from what I've heard. Learning how to make do or planning for what you need are pretty crucial."

He chuckles. "Then again, I might just be being a little too worried about this. Wouldn't be the first time."

[Zanja]

"Hm. Buying a bunch of camping stuff isn't hard. Just expensive," Zanja groused. A part of her felt like getting through the Trials with a minimum of high-tech tools would be more, well, badass. On the other hand, ignominiously freezing to death was pretty much the opposite of badass. "I know how to start fires and stuff. Though you have to have something to burn for that, I guess."

He thinks for a moment. "They have that firepaste stuff. I might get some of that, just in case."
