EVENT: Whisper (D9, MA)
Posted: Sat Feb 09, 2019 3:00 pm
by Hatoful GM
Day: 9
Time: Mid-Afternoon
Location: Holonesh Canyon
Participants: 3 or 4 PC
Useful skills: Mechanics, Resilience. Additional options for Computers, Perception, Piloting: Planetary, and Survival
Knight Corvin has asked the students to assist him with a task. There are a number of communications and surveillance beacons in place across the surface of Ilum. Normally, maintenance is difficult or impossible, as they are covered with ice and snow. Now, however, the same warmth that will the Crystal Caverns beneath the Jedi Temple makes it easier for these beacons to be worked on. Corvin will take care of the beacons between the temple and the landing base. He has asked the students to take care of those between the temple and Holonesh Canyon, including those in the canyon itself.
This is not very high priority work; although the maintenance window is short, the beacons should continue operating without it. Corvin suggests doing as many as they can, and marking them on the map so that the others can be prioritized next time.
A crew of students sets off to repair the first beacon. As they near it, the speeder's comms begin to pick up a signal...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Post to join, putting your character in the speeder on the way to the first beacon. Once the event is full, or twenty-four hours have passed, additional information and instructions will be provided. Please note, all rolls in this event will suffer two setback unless steps are taken to counter the cold weather. For some rolls, the setback can be cancelled by electrobinoculars or similar, but for the Resilience rolls, only thermal gear or appropriate talents will help.

Eir huddled in the speeder, thermal cloak wrapped tightly around her little frame, determined to show that a little cold never bothered her anyway.

Byron was there to help the cause.

Zanja squinted through the windscreen at the brilliant white landscape ahead. It was sort of pretty, in a stark way.

Silas was along for the trip, it wasn't exactly the kind of thing he had promised to Riggs, but it was it was close enough. These people needed help after all, and he intended to give it.

On the way to the first beacon, the comms begin to pick up a faint signal.
"... checking it out. Current time is *crackle*. Will update when I can.
...
Message Repeat. This *crackle*... ... ... lost for *crackle* ... ... ...
I'm going t- *crackle* ... find her. Last... *crackle* ... checking it out. Current time is *crackle*. Will update when I can."
It is hard to tell, but the speaker is likely a woman.

Mechanics:
Repairing the beacons is long, cold, difficult work. Everyone who does work at a beacon site will need to make a hard resilience check; failure gets three strain, modified up or down by advantage and disadvantage, minimum of one. Despair adds one setback to every roll the character makes for the rest of the event.
Repairing the beacon is an average mechanics check, and requires two people; each one after the first counts as assisting. Two advantage or setback can modify either the roll to find the next beacon, or the roll to repair it; roller's choice. Anyone can choose to remain in the vehicle, which drops the difficulty of the resilience check to easy, with the minimum removed.
Failure on a roll to repair a beacon means that the job gets done, but mistakes make it take longer. Everyone working takes 3 extra strain. Triumph means your roll to find the next beacon is automatically a success, Despair makes it impossible to find an easier route.
Remember the setback if you don't have some way to deal with the cold. This includes the resilience rolls; the setback can be removed, but you still need to roll. Welcome to Ilum.
To find the next beacon, the students can either follow the simple routes selected for them, with the designated pilot taking one strain, or try to find something better:
Pilot: Planetary - Hard. The pilot pushes the limits of the vehicle
Computers - Average. The student is able to pick up on the signal, letting them find the beacon faster
Perception - Average. The student is able to spot a faster route
Survival - Average. The student uses their knowledge of terrain to find a faster route
Force Power - Seek. The student uses the Force to find the beacon
The pilot roll can only be done by the pilot, and the pilot can not do any other roll. If another student makes this attempt, they take one strain as well as the pilot. Success on this roll decreases the next resilience check to average for the workers, no roll required for those in the speeder.
Each repaired beacon will get some additional information. This will be posted as beacons are repaired.

Byron looked at Silas and said, "Shall we get to work?"

“We should rotate as we go, two people on the beacon, two people stay warm. Anyone want to go first?” Eir would volunteer if no one else wanted to.

Eir sighed as Byron was out of the speeder without a word to anyone. “Who’s going with him?”

Upon repairing the first beacon, the message clears up:
"Message Repeat. This is Jedi Knight Erica Sunlian. I'm tracking the lieutenant. She has been lost for three hours with no communication.
I'm going to try to find her. Last known communication came from the northwest. I'm checking it out. Current time is 2313. Will update when I can."
The speaker is a soft-voiced woman of indeterminate age, likely from the Core Worlds. It is also nowhere near 2313.

In the speeder, Zanja pored over the chart, plotting the quickest path to the next beacon site.
She perked up on hearing the static clear over the cockpit speaker. "What lieutenant?"

D9 MA Whisper--beacon 1 Resilience (in the truck = easy). Thermal cloak.:
2eA+1eD 1 success

If somebody else spends the 1 strain to be the pilot, I have a good chance of hitting the Survival roll as navigator...

“I hate the fraking cold,” Eir muttered as she was buffeted by the wind pouring in each time the speeder’s hatch to climb in of out.
——
[D9 MA] So cold (Resilience, Speeder, Cloak):
2eA+1eD 0 successes

Strain 3 (of 13)

"Okay, so, we're going to head west till we see this big ice ridge..." Studying the map, Zanja directed whichever other youngling was going to take this turn at the speeder controls.
--
D9 MA Whisper--beacon 1 -> 2 navigation, Survival average:
1eP+3eA+2eD 1 success, 1 advantage

Success = resilience rolls for the next round are reduced by 1
1 advantage to... notice a cool cloud or something
12/13 strain
