Lightsabers 101 (Training Hall,LA, OPEN)

Taime dashed in, cursing himself for getting distracted on the way to lightsaber training. He bowed as he entered and said, "I am sorry to be late. May I still join?"

“Yes, the Way of the Mynock or Resilience form, developed by the early Jedi to counter the widespread usage of blaster fire, so it is a very defensive form that channels the essence of the Jedi virtue of non-aggression,” Byron added as he tested a training lightsaber.

“Though some criticize it for being too defensively minded and lacks the aggression of Shien or Ataru, but I prefer survival so it fits me just fine.”

“Ooh, well,” Eir’s glowing eyes opened wide, “they’re big, ugly, leathery things with wings and no face. Instead of a face they just have a big mouth with lots and lots of tendrils,” she held her hands up to her face and wiggled her fingers, leaning towards the girl and making exaggerated slurping sounds.

"Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww..." The human girl said in much the same way as the twi'lek boy had said earlier. She was also clearly laughing.

She leaned way back a moment, but then leaned forward. Lifting her hand to her mouth, she made her own slurping sounds, imitating Eir.

[Orgus Din]

Chuckling, Master Orgus raised up his hands. "Yes, yes, good answers everyone. Even if it was on the second try for a few of you. Be patient, let the answers come to you." He waved casual acknowledgment of Taime's entrance.

He raised his training lightsaber, although he did not ignite it. "Yes, the resilience form. Soresu focuses on defensive techniques. They are used to protect you, and others. Keeping yourself and others alive is important, after all." Again, deadpan.

He nodded to the group. "It's hard to win a lightsaber fight without going on the offense. So how can a style focused on defense lead you to victory?"

Ares stood and smiled. He recalled being so young... not so happy though. Still, the kids deserved their happiness. He stood closer to one, leaning down and slightly adjusting his form. "Hold it higher a bit. The saber has no real weight, unlike a vibrosword, so you can move it quicker and easier."

Several of the kids clustered around Ares, following his examples.

Arees blushed, but took up the basic stance. It was for Shii-Cho though, he only saw Soresu, but he didn't focused on it.

"You wait for an opening. Or rather, you make one." He stated simply.

Taime followed the teacher's lead, keeping quiet and watching intently. He didn't have the build for some of the lightsaber work others did, so he needed to rely on technique.

[Eir]

Eir’s slurps turned to chuckles, the laughter dying on her lips as she saw Byron out of the corner of her eye. Less than two hours he’d chided her for not being dignified enough. Setting her jaw, the half-arkanian unclipped her training saber, a took up the balanced, defensive Soresu stance.

[Orgus Din]

Arees blushed, but took up the basic stance. It was for Shii-Cho though, he only saw Soresu, but he didn't focused on it.

"You wait for an opening. Or rather, you make one." He stated simply.

Orgus nodded. "That's part of it. Anything else?"

[Byron Mik]

“I mean an opening is the right thing, find it and strike. I just, I approach each opponent differently, a strong defense can be an offense. If they have blasters one can turn those blaster bolts back onto the attacker, a powerful parry can open up an opponent for a riposte,” he added with a smile.

“A master of Soresu can make an opponent pay for every attack they make and stay unscathed in the process. Now me, well I will just hope my collapsed body will act as a speed bump.”

Taime ponders for a moment. "Is it that victory can be different in different circumstances? Such as, in some cases victory may be distracting someone until someone you're defending escapes or keeping their attention on you. Victory doesn't only mean defeating another."

It was a bit of a risk, but he hoped he wasn't too far off.

[Zizzy Roosh]

Zizzy looked over at the pale student, she didn't remember bumping in to this one before. "That makes sense too. Staying alive to fight another day can be a victory. Outlasting your opponent can be a victory, you could tire them out with a good defense."

He nods in response. "Yes, exactly. Is that the sort of thing you meant, Master Orgus?"

[Orgus Din]

Again, Orgus smiled. "There are many right answers. You are finding some of them." He nodded to Taime. "With Soresu, you do need to always think about what your goal is. For Jedi, defeating the enemy is only sometimes the answer."

He looked around. "With Soresu, you need to fight smart, not hard. Same as with any job. Part of that is looking for the opening, like you said. And part of that is economy. Outlasting your opponent. Even the strongest blow only has to miss by a hair, and if you can make your opponent tire faster, you'll win." A nod to Zizzy, then.

He gave a decisive nod. "Let's go ahead and form into groups. Those of you who are more familiar with the techniques, try to group with someone less familiar. I'll be where I'm needed." He relaxed his arms once more, still holding the training saber. His eyes narrowed as he looked around, alert for further questions, or an entirely clueless student.

[Ares Pax]

Ares stood awkwardly as the group of students still seemed to congregate around him. He moved, and the group moved with him.

"Do you guys know Soresu?" he asked awkwardly.

Taime shook his head. "It has some crossover with my own style, but I haven't studied it."

[Eir]

Eir seemed content to pair up with the human girl next to her, helping her with her stance. "Yeah, like that. Don't swing, you want to anticipate where your opponent's attacks will land so that your lightsaber will be there before them. Keep your lightsaber close, as if you were waiting for the last possible moment to defend. Be patient, conserve."

Eir seemed content to pair up with the human girl next to her, helping her with her stance. "Yeah, like that. The girl watched her for a few moments, her eyes wide.

Finally, she spoke. "Would you show me, senior student? I don't think I quite understand."

Nearby, Orgus cast his gaze over.

Byron nodded and approached a group of younglings and said, “Alright little Jedi, time to show me what you have learned since the last time and Yilo no going for the shins this time. Effective but I like my shins. Remember stand tall, both hands on the weapon, keep your footing solid.”

“Yeah just like that Teebu, okay… no… Gon hold it from the other end, stop messing around this could save your friend’s life one day.”

He smiled at another, “Good anticipate the strike, let the Force guide your hands. Remember the goal is to save energy; don’t want to get tired before the enemy does. Now you are getting it, keep at it.”

Byron instructed and demonstrated as needed, despite his self deprecation it was clear he had taken the basics of Soresu to heart and was well versed in the basics of the practice.

The girl watched her for a few moments, her eyes wide.

Finally, she spoke. "Would you show me, senior student? I don't think I quite understand."

Nearby, Orgus cast his gaze over.

Eir grabbed one of the remotes and activated it, but knowing that the girl was watching so closely made the skin between her shoulder blades prickle, and she choked, missing the remote's shot, but managing to get out of the way before she got zapped.

"Uh, well, not like that," she grimaced.
