The path to becoming a Jedi is not easy, there are perhaps only a handful in the Galaxy, a few million in existence compared to the trillions of people in the galaxy. The training to become a Jedi usually takes a couple of decades, this begins young and ends to end when many species are in the age of majority. For a human being a padawan typically ends around the age of 20 to 25 for reference. Prospective Jedi in the Republic are identified early in their lives often as toddlers, preferably before the child has developed too many attachments to their birth family or parents.

Within the Republic this is seen as a great honor and opportunity as the youngling will get one of the best educations any family could ask for and even if they don’t become a Jedi they will have completed and been filtered into a top class education program. In fact most younglings do not become Jedi, most either do not have the level of Force ability or temperament to be Jedi. This is common and there is no stigma for such individuals.

The training as a youngling is most often done in groups, regardless of where in the Galaxy they might be trained, as the Jedi Order have Conclaves on other worlds (Coruscant is simply the biggest temple and thus the seat of the Jedi Order). In these groups, the Younglings learn not only the basics of the Force, and later on Lightsaber-use, but also to trust and support their fellow students. Where Sith training is inherently competitive as teachers pit students against one another, Jedi training focuses on harmony and teamwork within the group - a Jedi never stands alone; the Force is with them, and so are their fellow Jedi.

Younglings also recieve education that most other Republic citizens go through, so that the many that do not become Padawans also have a future within many fields of work or study. Otherwise, their training covers philosophy - particularly the Jedi Code - and other esoteric topics such as understanding the Force, and Lightsaber combat. Most younglings also take part in the various charity-efforts that the Jedi Order perform, ranging from makeshift hospitals in diseased areas to soup-kitchens in impoverished communities, but the intention is always the same: to help those who have less and to provide hope to those lacking it.

Graduating from Youngling to Padawan is an important step, and it is usually considered the last drop-off point for those not suited to become a Jedi. A youngling can become a padawan as young as their earliest teen years, or as late as their late teen years - the Jedi are understanding that some students need a bit more time to mature before embarking on the next step in their journey to become Jedi. Padawan is a time of doing, while Youngling is a time learning, Padawans put their training into action. It is also at this time that they build their first lightsaber. Early in their career they tend to stay close to their Master but later in their training they may take on missions by themselves. No two Padawan journeys are the same but in in general the bond between Master and Padawan is deep and profound and often lasts a lifetime.

Padawans graduate to the rank of Jedi at their behest of their Master, once they feel they have the right mindset and training to be a Jedi. This can be a formal affair or simply a private acknowledgement between Master and Padawan at this point the Jedi can pursue their duties as they see fit in service to the Republic.

This game will be focusing on the transition from youngling to Padawan. This is usually considered the last stage for filtering out those who do not have the right mindset or spirit to follow the path to become Jedi. There is no shame or stigma for those who do not become Jedi, and there are still many opportunities for them to assist the Jedi Order without becoming Jedi themselves.
